New Year’s Day Service

We begin the new year together before Amida Buddha, saying the Nembutsu.

Hoonko: Memorial Service for Shinran Shonin

Our most important service of the year, held in memory of Shinran Shonin, the founder of Jodo Shinshu. We gather to hear the teaching he devoted his life to sharing.

MARCH

Spring Higan Service

Held at the spring equinox. Higan means “the other shore” of enlightenment, which we reach not through our own efforts but through Amida Buddha’s Vow.

APRIL

Hanamatsuri: Sakyamuni Buddha’s Birthday

The “flower festival” celebrating the birth of Siddhartha Gautama, who attained enlightenment and became Sakyamuni Buddha, the historical Buddha.

MAY

Gotan-e: Shinran Shonin’s Birthday

Celebrating the birth of Shinran Shonin in 1173. Through his life, the Nembutsu teaching has come down to us today.

JUNE

Obon Service

Also called Kangi-e, the “Gathering of Joy.” Remembering loved ones, we rejoice in Amida Buddha’s compassion, which embraces them and us alike.

Hatsubon: First Obon Memorial Service

For families observing their first Obon since a loved one’s passing, gathering to hear the Dharma together.

Bon Dance

A traditional dance held with Obon. Families and neighbors dance together in joy, remembering loved ones.

SEPTEMBER

Autumn Higan Service

Held at the autumn equinox, when day and night are in balance, a reminder of the Middle Way taught by the Buddha.

NOVEMBER

Eitaikyo (Perpetual Memorial Service)

Remembering those who have passed away, we gather so that the Buddha’s teachings will continue to be shared with generations to come.

DECEMBER

Bodhi Day: Sakyamuni Buddha’s Enlightenment

Commemorating Sakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, the source of all Buddhist teachings.

Some observances are held jointly with Honohina-Papaaloa Hongwanji Mission and Honomu Hongwanji Mission.
